Statement on the shooting death of Alex Pretti, RN

The NP Council of Miami–Dade Board of Directors would like to express our sadness and outrage for the unjust and unjustifiable killing of a fellow nurse and American citizen, Alex Pretti, RN on January 24, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pretti was an ICU nurse of many years working for the Veterans Health Administration. He was killed by federal immigration officer while expressing his constitutional rights and protecting a female colleague from harm. 

We disavow violence towards all Americans and immigrants. The Code of Ethics for Nurses impels all nurses to stand up for justice and against human rights violations. 

We offer condolences to his parents, family, colleagues, and community. The nursing community grieves with you.
